Secondly, perhaps, I equate honesty with rationality (more specifically, naturalism as one of the philosophical positions), because that represents greater consistency with how I view 'other' things in life. So, I wouldn't really know what it means to be too much honest, especially so with oneself. :)

Yes, I agree a lot religious ideas are directed towards comforting us against the emptiness and 'futility' of existence as far as some external purpose to life is concerned. Having been a believer in the existence of God, I know how it feels.

The doctor issue: well I am surprised, it seems a lot non-medical persons (as well as doctors themselves) tend to think that doctors must believe in the existence of God, perhaps because the idea medical miracles and uncertainties have been quite romanticized. And also perhaps, nothing involves greater desperation than trying to save someone's life, at which doctors many times fail. So perhaps, this creates a subconscious idea that this helplessness must translate into submission to and proxy-control through some higher authority (God), but at least I do not think that way. Many others do. :)

Thanks for reading and commenting!Ketanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02622410643454108685noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8852336071366459734.post-9136041583993994982010-08-30T17:05:47.027+05:302010-08-30T17:05:47.027+05:30Very interesting write up. From my experience (which might not be yours)extreme rationality sometimes creates vacuum and unless one knows how to deal with it, it can become dangerous. I believe that the whole religious discourse is to save human beings from this emptiness : though I guess it creates other kind of emptiness.
Being a doctor if you are an atheist, I think it is a great journey! Hope you keep it up.aativashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10637505515780080897noreply@blogger.com
